What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants comprise three parts: the implant post, the implant restoration, and the abutment that attaches the implant post and restoration to each other. The implant post is best described as an artificial “root” of the replacement tooth. Made out of titanium, it is fused to the jawbone to provide proper structure and support for the restoration.

The implant restoration is the “crown,” or top, of the tooth and is placed like a cap over the implant to mimic a real tooth. The restoration itself is custom-made to match your smile and can be used with the same utility as a normal tooth.

Our Dental Implant Services

Dr. DeStefano is an experienced restoration dentist. As such, he provides many types of dental implants, including single-tooth implants, implant bridges, and implant-supported dentures. Learn more about each of these types of dental implants and how they work below:

Single dental implants are the most common type. For these implants, Dr. DeStefano replaces one missing or broken tooth by placing the implant post and adding an artificial tooth on top.

Single-tooth implants are the most straightforward. Sometimes, it’s necessary to get a couple of single-tooth implants in different spots. For example, if you have a missing tooth on your upper right arch and one on your lower left arch, two dental implants are needed to restore your smile.

Implant bridges are best for patients who have issues with multiple teeth in a row. With this treatment, Dr. DeStefano places two dental implants. After these implants heal, a bridge of artificial teeth is attached to the two implants on either side of the missing or damaged teeth. The implant bridge will “bridge” the gap in your smile.

Implant bridges work similarly to traditional dental bridges, but they last much longer and are even more durable without wearing down the teeth on either side of the restoration.

If you have issues with many of your teeth, an implant-supported bridge can restore your smile and improve your ability to do everything from eating to chewing to speaking. While traditional dentures have their place, they are often uncomfortable and not very sturdy.

With implant-supported dentures, you can have an entire arch or full set of teeth replaced with around two to twelve dental implants. This process is known as All-on-X. Generally, you’ll need around two to six implants to support a full upper or lower arch, and around six to twelve to support an entire mouth.

After healing, the denture attaches to the dental implant, providing a beautiful, secure smile. These dentures can be permanent or removable.

Dental Implant Technology

For all dental implants, Dr. DeStefano utilizes CBCT imaging technology, which is an advanced option in dentistry. This tech allows him to make surgical guides for ideal implant placement to ensure long-term success and comfort.
